The LateX templates required for the papers can be used for the submitted abstracts as well (see below). Abstracts should be sent in pdf format, file name as “NAME_Varenna16_abstr.pdf”, by June 17, 2016 to:O. SAUTER, SPC/EPFL, Station 13, PPB-Ecublens, CH 1015 Lausanne, Switzerland Fax +41-21-6935176 e-mail: Varenna-Lausanne at epfl.ch

PROCEEDINGS

As in 2012/14, papers will be published in a refereed journal with IOP. The journal will be Plasma Phys. Contr. Fusion (PPCF), for the main papers, and Journal of Physics Conference Series (JPCS) for the other papers. – The papers published in PPCF will follow the usual refereeing process of this journal and will be published as a cluster of papers related to the Varenna-Lausanne Theory of Fusion Plasmas 2016 Conference. Follow the guidelines and then LaTeX templates. Note that YOU NEED TO PROVIDE THE PDF PAPER BY FRIDAY 26 AUGUST 2016, so that we can organize the refereeing process in due time.

– The papers published in JPCS will be refereed mainly by the scientific committee and participants of the conference, supervised by X. Garbet and O: Sauter, acting as Editors. The JPCS papers will have a header stating explicitly that the papers have been refereed. Naturally the refereeing process will be lighter (typically one referee) than the PPCF publication. Follow the guidelines and the LateX templates. Note that YOU NEED TO PROVIDE THE PDF PAPER BY FRIDAY 26 AUGUST 2016, so that we can organize the refereeing process in due time. When submitting the paper, the author can propose a publication in PPCF or JPCS, however the final decision is under the responsibility of the scientific committee. Typically invited papers will be published in PPCF and contributed papers in JPCS. Papers, invited (10-12 pages) and contributed (6-8 pages), have to follow the Latex guidelines and templates provided by PPCF and by JPCS. The deadline for the paper is the week before the conference. Thus send the paper before August 26, 2016, by email to Varenna-Lausanne at epfl.ch

International Workshop

IMAGING

September 7 – 10, 2015

Villa Monastero, Varenna (Lecco), Italy

NEW: FINAL PROGRAM (pdf)

The Conference Proceedings will be published on JINST, online Journal of Instrumentation, as refereed journal papers. Instructions for authors are available here

Workshop POSTER: DOWNLOAD (pdf)

Purpose

The International Workshop on Imaging would like to approach the topic of Imaging in a different way from what is usually found at specialized meetings. Imaging techniques are used across many applications and research fields.

The public at large is familiar with biomedical imaging where main techniques are CT, SPECT/PET, MRI and Optical Microscopy. Other applications are found in engineering, cultural heritage research, security etc. where neutron and X-ray radiography and tomography play an increasing role.

The workshop will try to identify common approaches across different fields of research, techniques and scale lengths. Topics addressed will include:

– Overview of the different imaging technique

– Image formation and processing

– Algorithms for reconstruction and correction

– Image integration in space and time

– Imaging at different scale lengths

The Conference strongly encourages participation by young scientists. The programme will include tutorial lectures, invited oral presentations and posters.

Venue

The workshop is part of a long tradition of scientific events (conferences and schools) organized in the beautiful Villa Monastero at Varenna, on Lake Como. The Courses of the School held by the Italian Physical Society (http://www.sif.it/attivita/scuola_fermi), dating back to 1953, by now have become a special and precious opportunity of meeting for scientists and young physicists from all over the world and have reached considerable international prestige.

Another institution, the “Piero Caldirola International Centre” (http://www.ispp.it) hosted by Milano-Bicocca University has been running courses and workshops in Varenna since 1972.

It is especially valuable to entertain lecturers and participants to Workshops, Conferences and Advanced Schools in the Varenna charming environment, giving encouragement for scientific and philosophical discussions even outside the formal sessions, while walking in the beautiful gardens of Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi or sitting in a small café. The meeting room in Villa Monastero (formerly a chapel) has a capacity of about 90 seats which is a convenient size for workshops aimed at an effective and informal exchange between participants.

Poster Prize

A prize for best Poster presentation by young scientist (under 35) will be awarded during the conference.

Proceedings of the conference

The Conference Proceedings will be published on, online Journal of Instrumentation, as refereed journal papers. Instructions for authors are available here

Purpose
The motivation, scope and aim of the FUNFI workshop derive from the renewed interest
in nuclear energy that has led to new construction of fission reactors and R&D on next generation (GIV) types. Research on fusion reactors is continuing and has recently branched off to include plasmas of limited energy gain constituting powerful neutron sources suited for irradiation purposes, which can be tailored as drivers for sub-critical fission reactors.
Fusion-fission hybrid reactors allow increased extraction efficiency of the
fission fuel energy with relaxed energy gain demand on the fusion plasmas.
FUNFI will address the physics principles of fusion-fission hybrids and current
research. The focus will be on the characteristics of different plasmas in magnetic confinement that can serve as drivers in hybrid reactors, as well as, driver interface to surrounding neutron reaction blankets.
The workshop is directed to scientists and PhD students on FUNFI hybrid research
and relevant fields of magnetic fusion plasmas, fast fission reactors, neutron physics, etc., besides those interested in learning more about the potential role of fusion-fission hybrids
to provide better nuclear energy.
The program will contain tutorials on scientific/technical background for FUNFI
including its potential role in future use of nuclear energy, besides complementary lectures on selected research activities. The program will also include submitted contributions (on magnetic FUNFI plasmas), of which a selection will be made for presentation in the oral or poster sessions. Ample time is scheduled for discussions.
Besides the science/engineering aspects of hybrids, there will be a concluding session on the theme ‘Future nuclear energy with FUNFI’ based on special lecture presentations.

Special Lectures
·Geo-political and strategic aspects of present and future nuclear energy.  Hans Blix (Former GD of IAEA)
· Nuclear energy acceptance and potential role to meet future energy demand.
