The 'Piero Caldirola' International Centre for the Promotion of Science and International School of Plasma Physics (ISPP) was founded in 1971 by a group of professors of the University of Milano (Italy). In 1973 ISPP became a permanent and autonoumus Foundation. The first President and Director of ISPP was Prof. Piero Caldirola, a well known scientist  in the field of Quantum Physics. In 1984 , after the decease of Piero Caldirola , the School was dedicated to his name and Prof. Elio Sindoni, former Scientific Secretary of ISPP, was appointed as new President and Director. In 1986 Prof. Donato Palumbo , former Director of the Fusion Programme of the European Community, accepted the position of President "ad honorem" of ISPP.

The major aims of the 'Piero Caldirola' International Centre for the Promotion of Science and International School of Plasma Physics are the following :

The most part of the activities of ISPP take place in Varenna, a small  town lying on the east bank of the Como lake (Italy), at Villa Monastero or Villa Cipressi.  It is especially valuable to entertain lecturers and participants to Workshops, Conferences and Advanced Schools in the Varenna charming environment, giving encouragement for scientific and philosophical discussions even outside the formal sessions, while walking in the beatiful gardens of Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi or sitting in a small café.
